Hideo Kojima reflects on his legacy of making 'experimental' games and says OD will be 'just as different'
Game designer Hideo Kojima has discussed his legacy of creating 'experimental' games, and has teased that the upcoming horror project, O.Dwill be 'just as different'.
Today (January 4) on Twitter, Kojima wrote: βI seem to have gained recognition by creating games that go against the grain of time, such as 'hide and seek' games where you sneak into a building without being noticed by the enemy, or 'delivery games' where you You like to move in an open world.β
He continued, noting that βthe most experimental game was 'defeating vampires outside your house' using real sunlight around you,β referring to the Boktai games. These used a built-in sun sensor, which was required to play the first three Game Boy Advance games (although it was optional in the fourth title released on the Nintendo DS, called Moon Knights).
βIt was met with fierce opposition from the staff and even within the company,β Kojima said of the Boktai series. “In this way, O.D is just so different.β
Currently we know very little about it O.D, which was officially announced last month at The Game Awards 2023. Sophia Lillis, Udo Kier and Hunter Schaffer will star, but at the time of writing it is not yet known what their roles will be, or how the game will play. Filmmaker Jordan Peele is also working on the project.
Kojima teased on stage at The Game Awards: βIt's a game, don't get me wrong, it's also a movie and a new form of media at the same time.β
O.D is being developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios using cloud gaming technology, but no announcement has been made as to when we can expect it to be released.
