Ridiculous reason councils have ditched iconic Australia Day tradition: ‘Seriously?’

A politician has suggested some councils have scrapped citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day because of the heat.

City of Sydney Labor Councilor Linda Scott gave the reason after being questioned about why there would be no citizenship ceremonies in the city on January 26.

“The council makes its decisions for a variety of reasons,” she told 2GB's Mark Levy on Wednesday morning.

“Certainly as national head of the Local Government Association, I've heard from councils saying that sometimes they don't have burgers that can be made on Australia Day, and sometimes the heat is an issue.”

Ms Scott's comments come after it was revealed that more than 80 councils across the country had canceled citizenship ceremonies that day.

Levy immediately addressed Ms. Scott's bizarre explanation and gave her a blunt response.

'Come on. Come on, Linda. I'm not stupid. Serious?'

“What better day than Australia Day, when modern Australia was created, for new Australians to receive their citizenship?”

Ms Scott deviated from that, claiming there were more than 500 councils, each with a different approach.

Levy branded the heat excuse “nonsense” and branded it a “cop-out – more wokesim from the City of Sydney council”.

Sydney Mayor Clover Moore previously said her council's decision to scrap Australia Day ceremonies had widespread support as the controversial holiday was a “painful” day for many people.

Instead, ceremonies will be held in the city on January 29.

The Albanian government at the end of 2022 removed a rule that forced councils to cling Australia day ceremonies of citizenship.

In 2022, only four municipalities opted not to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day: three in Melbourne and the city of Sydney.

But on Saturday the Herald Sun revealed more than 80 councils across Australia have decided to scrap citizenship ceremonies on January 26, including more than a quarter of councils in Victoria.

The announcement divided Australians, with some supporting the move while others condemned it.

'How pathetic is this once great country becoming?' one person furious on social media platform

“Far left/green councils,” another added.

'January 26 is Australia Day, supported by the majority of Australians, only those who don't support it hate this country.'

“It's a bloody slap in the face to those who pay rates to keep them in work,” wrote another irate X user.
