Mill Park explosion injures 15 people and leaves eight with serious burns after horror NYE celebration

Fifteen people have been injured and eight suffered serious burns after a fire broke out in a Melbourne backyard during New Year's celebrations.

Nearly a dozen people are in hospital after a fire exploded in the garden of a house in Mill Park, in Melbourne's north-east, at 11.10pm on Sunday.

Eight patients were rushed to Alfred Hospital to be treated for significant burns, while three others were taken to Northern Hospital for treatment.

Another four patients were treated at home and not taken to hospital.

Detectives spent Monday assessing the rear of the property, which was covered with police tape during the investigation.

Several bags of evidence were taken from the home, including bottles and containers filled with liquid Herald Sun reports.
