Former McDonald’s worker explains why they don’t give away extra sauce packets to customers

  • A question posted online asked why more sauce with resources isn't being distributed
  • A former employee said there are allocations depending on the meal
  • He said they charge extra to prevent people from 'misusing' the sauces

Have you ever wondered why there isn't an extra sauce sachet in your McDonald's bag?

A former McDonald's employee has told how the fast-food chain determines how many sauces each person gets when answering a question posted on Quora: 'Are McDonald's employees not allowed to hand out so much sauce?'

“We're not being told not to give out 'too much sauce,' but instead we're being told that with each specific purchase, a particular sauce packet will be provided for free,” Quora user Ivan Josiah Lapis said in the post.

Ivan, who said he worked at McDonald's in 2013, explained that for an order consisting of four to six nuggets, the customer is allocated one sachet of sauce – and an additional packet can be added at their discretion.

According to a former McDonald's employee, they're told not to give out “too much sauce,” but instead we're told that with each specific purchase, a certain sauce packet will be given for free.

“If you have a 10 nugget, you automatically get two free and at your discretion, another free if the customer requests it,” he explained.

'If you have a pack of 20, you get three, plus an extra at your discretion. This extra package is fully included in the costs, but we try to save them so that we can save.'

Ivan explained why they charged for extra sauces, saying that the company would save money for every twenty sauces they didn't give out.

“The less you have to spend on these things, the more you can spend your budget on more pressing losses,” he said.

'The main reason we charge for extra packages is to prevent abuse.

“Isn't it reasonable to assume that two packets of sauce are enough for a six-pack of nugget?” If you need more, what on earth do you do with the nuggets?'

According to Ivan, they are introducing charging for extra sauces to 'prevent abuse'.

“Realistically, we don't mind giving extra if it makes you happy, just that the price of an item doesn't just take into account the ingredients and materials,” Ivan said.

“Most people forget that labor costs and other expenses such as electricity and gas also need to be taken into account,” he noted. McDonald's doesn't really make as much money as you think when it comes to individual sales. So we save where we can.'

In a recent addition to the post, Ivan from Ontario, Canada pointed out that he wrote that post over five years ago, so the policy may have changed since then.

Another Quora user, Kayla Gerard — who, according to her profile, worked at the chain in 2018 — wrote, “Managers get in trouble for giving away free sauce to their employees.

“It's not that we're greedy with our sauce, we're just trying to do our job without getting into trouble.”
