Watch the hilarious moment UFC cult hero submits footy star leaving his teammates in stitches

  • Ben Askren has submitted an Aussie Rules star
  • He joined Hawthorn for training
  • Jai Newcombe tapped an armbar

Ben Askren has long retired from mixed martial arts but proved he still has plenty of skills after submitting an Aussie Rules star in a light-hearted wrestling match.

The 39-year-old Askren, a former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder, met with the Hawthorn Football Club earlier this month as the AFL prepared for the 2024 season.

Midfielder Jai Newcombe decided to test himself against the former national freestyle wrestling champion, with the pair seen in a playful battle, much to the amusement of the other Hawthorn stars.

Askren briefly foot-slammed Newcombe before the 22-year-old got back to his feet.

The MMA veteran managed to secure a single leg before lifting Newcombe off the ground and driving him to the mat. From side control, Askren advanced to an armbar before Newcombe relented and tapped.

Fans were impressed with Askren's wrestling display, especially considering the 39-year-old recently underwent hip replacement surgery.

Prior to his move to the UFC, Askren was an undefeated fighter with a record of 19 wins and zero losses. Ten of those wins were in championship fights.

However, he is best remembered for his brutal knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal – the fastest knockout in UFC history by just five seconds.

After leaving the MMA giant, Askren fought YouTuber boxer Jake Paul, where he was viciously knocked out in one round.
