Kansas City Chiefs tight end offensive coordinator Matt Nagy praised quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his off-field mentality while also admitting the offensive performance against the Las Vegas Raiders wasn't good enough.

“All he cares about after every game is winning and losing,” Nagy said of Mahomes. “When you lose a game, now you get into the 'why' part. What happened? Why did it happen?

“There are variables involved in every game. Sometimes [they] are noticed by people in the building and outside the building – players, others – and sometimes it's very obvious.'

The Chiefs turned in one of their worst offensive performances of Mahomes' six-year career during the 20-14 loss to the Raiders on Christmas.

Frustration on the Chiefs' sideline prompted tight end Travis Kelce to slam his helmet into the ground in anger during the game and also bump into head coach Andy Reid as Reid tried to calm him down.

“If there's a play where a guy is wide open, does he have time as a quarterback – or any quarterback – to throw it? Out of 11 guys, one breaks,” Nagy continued.

'Or, if there is protection, [is there] is something going differently? So what I'm saying is [that] In short, we want to do our best to get to that point where all eleven and twelve – plus us as coaches – really work together to be effective. When we do that, we're pretty good.

'[Mahomes’] frustration comes from losing – and then leads to why? Why on the attack – and how can we get better? The great thing is that we stick together and work towards solutions. That's one of our biggest strengths – and Pat is phenomenal at that.”

Nagy also said those in the Chiefs building quickly got back to work to correct their worst performance of the season.

“There is such a big responsibility on this team, the players and coaches,” Nagy said.

“So we get together the next day and start talking through all that. Without going into details, I think it's been a very productive week so far: we've been trying to come up with answers and solutions and stick together.

“But at the end of the day you have turnovers that turn into points in seven seconds [and] the penalties; it was kind of the same.

'I think we want to make sure [we do]: that we as a staff ensure that we help these boys: really speak to them, understand why we do it and how we can get better at it.'
