When it comes to desirable feminine aesthetics, we're in the age of big butts.
The ample assets of celebrities like the Kardashian sisters and rapper Cardi B have popularized the big behind-the-back look, leading to a rise in demand for treatments such as fat injections to enhance the buttocks.
And now it seems the trend has spread across all genders. According to fitness and fashion insiders, men are increasingly looking for the same look.
They say the pandemic was a turning point: Men developed a love for the way their bodies looked and felt in activewear.
According to men's fashion brand Rhone, demand for slim, form-fitting trousers has therefore increased by 55 percent since 2021.
American men are increasingly interested in pursuing bigger butts, much like the trend for women that has grown over the past decade
“Guys now expect their work pants to fit and move the same way as their gym clothes,” said Ben Checketts, co-founder and creative director of the company.
Checketts told Men's health that their increasingly popular slim 'commuter pants' borrow design cues from athletic shorts that 'flatter rather than flatten the glutes'.
'We use materials that have four-way stretch, no bunching and no diaper ends.'
Fitness experts have also spoken about the trend.
'More and more guys want to increase the strength and size of their glutes,' says fitness expert and Olympic trainer Gareth Sapstead.
“You can hide a lack of abs, but not if you have a pancake butt!”
But he says it's not just about aesthetics: there's increasing awareness among male gym-goers of the numerous benefits of glute strengthening.
“Men are increasingly aware that strengthening their glutes can help them crush 5Ks and dominate pickup basketball,” says Sapstead.
“If you're struggling with a cranky lower back, it's best to focus on strengthening your glutes through different exercises, patterns, and ranges of motion.”
Reality star Kim Kardashian is known for outfits that show off her ample butt
Meanwhile, thousands upon thousands of gym guys are posting videos on TikTok to show off their ample booty.
Others demonstrate the precise fitness routine that resulted in their tight, big butts.
To strengthen the glutes, fitness professionals recommend a combination of exercises that work all three groups in that area: the maximus, medius and minimus.
This includes weighted squats – where you balance a dumbbell on your lap and push the hips up while lying on the floor.
Lunging and squatting with weights are also helpful, as is stepping on a block while holding a heavy weight.
