Aston Villa and Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez are not taking any chances with his fitness before heading to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The shot stopper is expected to start for Argentina in their tournament opener against Saudi Arabia on November 22 and is currently with the national team for their friendly against Honduras.
Once back from international duty, Martinez hopes to play all nine games for Steven Gerrard’s side, but is aiming to avoid injuries.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez takes no risks about his fitness for the World Cup
The 30-year-old told the Argentine newspaper Clarin: ‘When we come back from this tour, we will be left with the month of October and nothing else.
“I was just talking with my brother that in October we have nine or ten games with Aston Villa between now and the World Cup, which go by very quickly. That’s why we enjoy this tour with the guys because it’s the last one.
“I said I would prepare this year like I’ve never prepared in my life, but when you play so many games it’s more about recovery and the fear of not getting injured. There’s no time for anything now.
Martinez has stopped eating bread and drinking Coke to boost his condition
“Now someone is injured for four to six weeks and is already half a meter outside the World Cup.
“It’s normal for the player to be scared. I take care of myself more than ever. I try not to touch bread. I win a competition and I want a Coke and I don’t. Those are things I’m changing to minimize the risk of injury.”
Like many Premier League clubs, Aston Villa has changed their schedule due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, but Martinez is only focused on getting through the games unscathed.
The Villans have not started the season in an ideal way as they have won just two of their seven games, leaving them 15th in the table.
