Single Aussies spill their ‘unofficial dating rules’ – from never meeting someone from Bondi to keeping your Instagram handle a secret
A group of single Australians have listed their 'rules' when it comes to dating, including never exchanging Instagram handles and avoiding anyone from Bondi.
The conversation started on TikTok when young traveler Jade complained about dating culture in Australia and sought advice.
'Can someone please explain to me how Australian dating rules work? Because I don't understand,” she asked in a now-viral TikTok video.
“I feel like you're saying something wrong and you keep reading. And the number of dates that have been set up and the guys then never text me again has never happened anywhere else in the world.
'Every woman I talk to has that [had] exactly the same horror stories about Australian men.'
Since the clip's publication, Aussies have shared their own struggles and guidance in an effort to help Jade.
Several Australians have listed their own dating rules after traveler Jade (pictured left) sought advice on TikTok. Alisha (right) shared a reaction video and suggested never dating someone from Bondi, not exchanging Instagrams and not feeling guilty about speaking to multiple people
Alisha shared a reaction video on Tuesday and is happy to share her tips when it comes to looking for 'the one'.
First, she recommended “never” giving your date your Instagram account — she didn't specify why, but most agreed it was for security and privacy reasons.
Then she added, “Don't feel guilty if you're talking to multiple people, because the Lord knows the man you're talking to is talking to multiple women.”
The third and perhaps most controversial point was to 'run' if someone you are dating is from Bondi.
'Just remember the hot summer mantra for girls: Australian men are here for a good time, not for a long time. So if you want to find yourself a man, you might as well pack your bags and move to Europe,” she said.
Another woman with the TikTok handle @rockpaperstilettos (left) claimed Australian men will 'ghost you for no reason' and think 'they are the prize'. John (right) also joined in and said the trick is 'just don't date'
Another woman who goes by the name TikTok @rockpaperstilettos claimed Australian men will 'ghost you for no reason' and think 'they are the prize'.
“It is very rare to meet an emotionally intelligent man in this country,” she said in a video.
'You can't admit you like someone. It's a big game where whoever likes the other the least wins,” she said.
“No one wins, no one is happy, no one connects.”
She added that when she tries to convey her feelings to a man, she can “watch him implode.”
John also chimed in and shared his simple approach to Jade's question by posting a video of his own.
'So the trick is: you just don't go out. Yes? Life is then on an easy path and it is simpler,” he said bluntly.
The individual videos caused an uproar among hundreds of others who also shared their opinions on the topic.
Many said they have resorted to dating men from abroad or moved internationally after being unlucky in love Down Under.
“We are really in the trenches here in Australia,” one wrote, another said: “I gave up and got an American.” Strongly recommended.'
“You need to have filter/security questions for them. Make a list, point out the most important flags, ask them trigger questions and wait for a response,” a third added.
“It's somewhat reassuring to know that this is happening on both sides of the field. I feel you,” wrote another.
“Adult Australian males are an endangered species,” added another.
