Kim Jong Un has launched his own low-calorie beer in a bid to help North Koreans lose weight, just days after making a tearful plea for the country's women to have more babies.

As his citizens have revealed, thousands of entire families are starving to death under his rule. The deluded despot's state brewery tries to meet the demand for light beer among its weight-conscious citizens.

Their new version of Taedonggang beer will have “low sugar content and calories” and is “very effective for sports enthusiasts and overweight people,” according to outlet Choson Sinbo, which has close ties to the state. The sun reports.

The health-conscious drink is made by a brewery founded in 2001, which uses an English brewery that used to be in Wiltshire, and has now been demolished and reassembled in Pyongyang.

Rowan Beard, a tour manager at Young Pioneer Tours – which specializes in budget travel to North Korea – explained NK news: 'There is a strong demand for a beer that can prevent men from gaining weight in North Korea.'

North Korean men reported receiving tokens for two liters of beer every month, the outlet says, even though distilled rice alcohol Soju is the national drink.

It is the eighth beer made by the brewery, whose drinks have previously been exported to China and even South Korea.

It comes just days after an apparently highly choreographed emotional plea that saw the authoritarian leader dab his eyes with a handkerchief as he addressed thousands of women gathered at a National Mothers' Meeting in Pyongyang on Sunday.

“Preventing a decline in the birth rate and providing good child care are all household tasks we must perform while working with mothers,” Kim said at the event, also urging them to instill his Communist Party values in their children to impart.

Many in the large crowd – made up of women dressed in traditional multi-colored clothing – openly wept with their leader.

But it wasn't all a somber affair. Photos released by North Korean state media also showed the adoring crowd clapping and cheering Kim as he waved back from his seat, flanked by male officials in suits and military uniforms.

The event – the first National Mothers' Meeting in 11 years – took place amid a decline in the birth rate in the isolationist state, which has apparently raised concerns among top officials of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Kim addressed the audience as β€œDear Mothers,” telling them β€œwe are faced with a multitude of social tasks that our mothers should tackle together.”

The thinning plan also comes as citizens trapped in North Korea say they have seen mothers, unable to work due to illness, starve to death before their children succumb to the same fate.

They say Kim has used the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to reassert greater control over his citizens – by cracking down on those caught smuggling food into North Korea to sell in markets, or against anyone who comes close to the border.

Those caught approaching the border are shot dead as part of state executions. Witnesses say they saw four people lined up at the same time before being bombarded with bullets.

North Koreans say they have become so desperate – with many watching their neighbors and their children starve to death – that only an invasion of their country would end their suffering.
