Bobby Kotick to depart Activision before the end of the month
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick will officially step down from his position later this month, it has been confirmed.
After that was announced Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard was completedKotick stated that he was “fully committed to assisting with the transition,” and would remain CEO of the company until the end of 2023, reporting to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. Although no firm date was given at the time, it appeared that his eventual departure from the company was looming, and according to an internal memo written by Spencer and obtained by The Vergethat date has now been set for December 29.
Additionally, an email Kotick sent to Activision Blizzard employees (shared on the Activision Newsroom site), the CEO said: “It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work with you as we broaden the appeal of games.”
He continued: “I cannot adequately express the pride I have in the people who continue to contribute to our success and in all those who have helped me during the 32 years I have led this company. We are now part of the world's most admired company. That's not an accident.
“Phil Spencer has appreciated the magic of (Activision Blizzard King) for decades. When he approached Brian (Bulatao) and me two years ago and proposed acquiring the company, it was immediately clear that the combination of our businesses would allow us to continue to lead as the list of capable, well-resourced competitors grows. ”
Kotick stated that Spencer “shares our values and recognizes our talents,” and is also “passionate about our games and the people who make them.” He added: “He has bold ambition.”
Concluding his email, he thanked those who helped build Activision into what it is today. He also said: “As we enter our next exciting chapter, you couldn't be in better hands.”
