Amazing videos show the full extent of Iceland's spectacular volcanic eruption, which sees molten lava spewing into the air from cracks in the ground.

The eruption started around 2.9 kilometers north of the city of Grindavik at around 10:17 pm on Monday in the Sundhjuka crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Stunning images show rivers of magma flowing across the land and the sky filled with flames in a spectacular show of the Earth's power in the country known for its fire and ice.

Live-streamed footage of the eruption showed glowing orange jets of lava spewing from a fissure in the ground, surrounded by billowing clouds of red smoke.

The Norwegian Meteorological Agency estimates that 100 to 200 cubic meters of lava are spewing per second, which is “many times more than previous eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent years.”
