Senior BJP MLA and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh was unanimously elected as Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

The first session of the newly elected assembly started here on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Vinshu Deo Sai submitted a proposal for the election of 71-year-old Singh as speaker, which was seconded by Deputy CM Arun Sao.

Opposition Leader Charandas Mahant also moved a proposal for Singh's election as speaker, which was seconded by senior Congress leader and former CM Bhupesh Baghel.

Three more proposals were submitted by BJP members in favor of Raman Singh.

On Sunday, Singh submitted his nomination for the post of speaker and said his new responsibility will be to bring everyone together in the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha.
