Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth Christmas Day weather

Meteorologists have revealed what Australians can expect from the weather this Christmas Day, as an extreme heatwave grips large parts of the country.

Weather zone Meteorologist Felix Levesque told Ny Breaking Australia that most of the South East will not enjoy a “balmy summer day” on December 25.

Showers and cool temperatures are forecast for Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra, while Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Perth will remain mostly dry and warm.

Heatwave warnings lasting until Tuesday remain in force for large parts of WA, southeast Queensland, coastal and northern NSW, and parts of the NT.

Sydney

A southerly breeze, brought by a low-pressure tank, will bring cool temperatures and a chance of rain on Christmas Day in the port city.

Sydney will experience cool temperatures with lows of 20ºC and highs of 26ºC, while the day will remain mainly gray due to persistent cloud cover.

The northeast of the state will bear the brunt of the thunderstorms forecast over the Christmas long weekend.

Brisbane

Brisbane will experience warmer weather than the rest of the South East, with temperatures reaching lows of 22 degrees Celsius and highs of 32 degrees Celsius.

Because the city is on the north side of the low-pressure trough, the city will not receive the cooler temperatures forecast for the Southeast.

Mr Leveseque said Christmas Day will feel muggy and humid across most of Queensland, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Melbourne

Further south, the weather in Melbourne remains cloudy and gray, with initial forecasts of highs of just 19 degrees Celsius and lows of 15 degrees Celsius.

The same low pressure system bringing cool winds and showers to Sydney will also impact the Victorian capital, keeping temperatures low.

A cool southerly wind will affect the city for much of the run-up to Christmas.

Perth

Mr Levesque said the west coast should see slightly warmer temperatures this Christmas Day with lows of 21ºC and highs of 33ºC.

The meteorologist said a low-pressure heat trough will linger over Western Australia, bringing warmth to the state this week and next.

Christmas Day is likely to remain dry in Perth.

Canberra

There is a better than average chance of showers and thunderstorms in the country's capital this Christmas, with lows of 13ºC and highs of 25ºC.

However, Canberra is expected to be less affected by the wet weather than other cities due to its location on the southern side of the east coast storms.

Hobart

The island nation will also avoid scorching temperatures with forecasts of lows of 11ºC and highs of 20ºC on Christmas Day.

However, Hobart will remain mainly dry, with some cool winds and gray clouds.

The run-up to December 25 will also remain relatively cool.

Adelaide

Adelaide is also expected to be affected by the cooler, wetter weather this Christmas, with lows of 13ºC and highs of 24ºC.

Although there will be some south-easterly winds, the chances of breaking sunshine in Adelaide look better than the rest of the south-east.

The day will be mostly sunny, despite above-average rainfall across the state.

Darwin

Mr Levesque said forecasts show most of the heat this year will be concentrated around Darwin as the city enjoys more stable weather.

Christmas Day comes before the arrival of the wet season, with residents able to enjoy the holidays during the 'build-up period'.

Darwin can expect lows of 27ºC and highs of 35ºC with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
