BBC axes A Question of Sport after more than 50 years with chiefs citing ‘inflation and funding challenges’ for the long-running quiz show’s cancellation

  • Production of the BBC quiz show A Question of Sport has been halted indefinitely
  • A BBC spokesperson cited 'funding issues' as the reason for the decision
  • The show celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020, with a total of over 1,300 episodes

The BBC has announced that long-running sports quiz show A Question of Sport is no longer in production.

A BBC spokesperson told The Mirror: 'Due to inflation and funding issues, difficult decisions have to be made, which is why Question of Sport is not currently in production.'

The decision is said to have been made as a result of the program suffering declining viewing figures in recent years, combined with a lack of on-demand appeal.

However, although production has been halted, the BBC is said to have confirmed that the brand is not for sale and that the format could be revived in the future.

The show first debuted in 1970 and was initially helmed by former Match of the Day reporter David Vine.

The programme, which ran for more than 1,300 episodes, is perhaps best remembered for being presented by Wimbledon semi-finalist Sue Barker, who held the role for 24 years prior to her departure in 2020.
