Bruce Lehrmann, Brittany Higgins defamation trial live updates: Lisa Wilkinson takes to the witness box as cop’s extraordinary handwritten diary notes are revealed
Lisa Wilkinson will be called to the witness stand at 10.15am.
She will not try to prove that Brittany Higgins was allegedly raped by Bruce Lehrmann. Instead, she will try to prove that she did everything she could to provide a fair account of the allegations before The Project aired.
For Wilkinson, it could be a career-saving move.
Her life in the public eye came to a pause in the wake of her disastrous Logie acceptance speech in 2022, which she won for her interview with Ms Higgins.
The speech delayed the criminal trial of Mr. Lehrmann by three months and she faced so much criticism that she stopped making television appearances and was rarely seen in public.
She is expected to try to redeem herself on Thursday.
She could be asked about her negative views of Linda Reynolds, following a lengthy tirade about the former defense industry secretary during a five-hour recorded meeting with Ms Higgins – a few weeks before the broadcast.
“I have Linda Reynolds in my sights right now,” she said.
Network Ten producer Angus Llewellyn was questioned by Mr Lehrmann's lawyer, Matthew Richardson SC, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mr Llewellyn appeared to fumble in the witness box as he tried to explain why he so readily accepted Ms Higgins' version of events.
Namely why he didn't notice that she had sent him a screenshot taken on January 27, 2021 at 8:45 am, instead of in April 2019 as her legal declaration suggested.
He neglected to ask Ms Higgins for the metadata, relying solely on her word and released the photo, telling viewers it was an injury resulting from the alleged rape.
Mr Llewellyn was also unable to explain why he did not question Ms Higgins about several inconsistencies in her version of events.
One example was the claim that she was not supported by Linda Reynolds and her chief of staff Fiona Brown, and was forced to choose between her job and filing an official police complaint.
In her television interview with Wilkinson, Ms Higgins called Senator Reynolds and Ms Brown “nice” but seemed to suggest she felt her job was at stake.
Mr Llewellyn told the court he had not discussed the finer details with Wilkinson, and it was likely she would be questioned about the same.
Wilkinson hired Sue Chrysanthou SC to represent her rather than using Network Ten's lawyers.
