The TV star, who married the magician 28 years before his death from cancer in 2016, recalled the shocking incident during an appearance on Wednesday's GMB.

Debbie was working with the Iranian National Ballet when she and other dancers were held captive after being 'herded into an apartment building'.

She told shocked presenters Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley: 'That's how I met Paul (Daniels). I came back to England and needed a job.'

The former Strictly star, who was promoting her new series Million Dollar Motorhomes, said: 'I've lived a fairytale life but I've also had to deal with a lot of things. They all said, we didn't know you were a hostage in Iran.

Surprised, Kate replied, “Well, I didn't know that.”

As Richard asked, “How long have you been held hostage?”

Debbie continued, “About three months. I was working for a ballet company and all of us who were Western were herded into an apartment building.

“The boys had to go out at six in the morning and the only food we could get was from the bakers on the street, it was flat pizzas, no butter or anything, and maybe some cans of things and maybe a few eggs.”
