Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma has revealed his ambitions to emulate Yaya Toure, in a sit-down discussion with the Manchester City legend.
Bissouma joined Tottenham from Brighton in June on a £25m deal, while Toure arrived at the club a month later after taking on a full-time role as coach for the club’s academy.
In a video posted to Tottenham’s official Twitter account, Bissouma revealed that Toure was his hero growing up, and joked that he is ‘coming for the Ballon d’Or’ after taking advice from the former Ivory Coast international.
Yves Bissouma has revealed his ambition to be like his hero and Man City icon Yaya Toure
Bissouma said, ‘I can’t believe I’m with you, to be honest. Everyone knows – my family, my friends – that I am a big fan of yours.
“When I was young, I looked at you every day. I remember when I was at the academy in Mali, my inspiration was you.
“If they ask me which player do you like, which player do you think is the best? [my] position, I tell you because, even as a midfielder, I want to be like you one day. I know it’s not easy, but you can give me some secrets.’
Toure advised the 26-year-old, advising Bissouma to be “coachable” and bring out the best in himself every day.
He said: ‘The most important thing is try to be coachable, when I say try to be coachable, listen and focus all the time, always be focused.
Bissouma joked he’s ‘coming for the Ballon d’Or’ after Toure .’s advice
‘Take care of yourself. it’s really important because Premier League games come out week after week. Playing for me has always been [more] more important than training.
“That doesn’t mean I’m saying don’t train, you should train and always try to be available as much as possible, because it’s really important for your development.”
He added: ‘The most important thing is how you get the best out of it and you can take that with you. For you, every day is a time to evolve to get better and better.
‘Everything was a challenge for me, but everything was also learning for me. If it was an hour session, my strides have to get better and better. I have to make a clip of it and if I pass like this it’s better and if I pass like this it’s not good. I have to change it.’
In response to Touré’s comments, Bissouma joked that he is “coming for the Ballon d’Or.”
Bissouma has been struggling since coming from Brighton . especially with a place on the couch
Bissouma has had to make do with limited minutes since coming to Tottenham, with just one Premier League start and five appearances from the bench.
Manager Antonio Conte has often favored the combination of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in the center of the park.
Earlier this month, Conte said of Bissouma, ahead of their match with Fulham: “He has to work, go completely into the idea of football.
“He is one step behind Bentancur and Hojbjerg. the same for [Oliver] Skipp has been working with me all through last season. I’m happy with what I’ve seen during the game and we’re talking about a player with good skills and who is physically strong with a good engine.”
