George Clooney joked about Hitler's casting process Monday while promoting his latest film project on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The 62-year-old Hollywood star promoted the sports drama The Boys In The Boat which he directed and also co-produced.

The film follows the University of Washington team that represented the United States at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

'I want to ask you that. What is the process of casting, of finding your Hitler?' asked Jimmy, 56.

'It is difficult. Because men put on little crappy mustaches and tape themselves up,” George said, looking dapper in a gray suit.

“And you're like, dude. The good news is you got the part. The bad news is that you are Hitler. What's wrong?' said George.

Jimmy joked that he would never give George a video of himself with a Hitler mustache and then asked George what he did after he found his Hitler.

“Well, it's obviously depressing. It's actually kind of a relief, because when you're photographing a period piece and you do something, this is 1936. Everyone knew Hitler was a bad guy, and had no idea how much worse it was going to get. George said.

Jimmy said he found it interesting that the Americans were cheered when they came to Berlin by the Germans.

“Right before all hell broke loose,” George said.

'It was a funny thing. We were shooting, we were in London and we had to shoot in all these places and put up swastikas and it was horrible. And you always apologize. ''I'm so sorry.'' And we were shooting at the Greenwich Naval Academy museum and it's very British. And this old gentleman comes up, he's wearing the medals and he says, 'Right. What exactly are you going to photograph here?'' We were exploring the locations. And I said, 'Well, we're going to put some swastikas on the thing.' And he looked at me and said, 'Right. But no French flags, right?'' And I said: ''No''. That shit runs deep,” George said.

The Boys In The Boat is based on the 2013 film of the same name by Daniel James Brown and starring Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton.

The film will be released by Amazon MGM Studios in the United States on December 25.
