Dr Michael Yung home invasion, Adelaide: Top surgeon dies in hospital after being viciously bashed inside his $2MILLION home by a gang of thugs in a terrifying break-in – as cops reveal the disturbing clues uncovered in the hours before the attack

A highly respected doctor has died from his injuries after he was brutally attacked by a gang of thugs in his own home.

Michael Yung, 61, was attacked by the gang of youths about 4.20am on Monday after they broke into his $2 million home on James Street in Gilberton, north Adelaide.

Dr. Yung underwent emergency surgery after being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained in the unprovoked attack, including a stabbing.

His family made the heartbreaking decision to withdraw his life support on Tuesday afternoon after doctors at the Royal Adelaide Hospital concluded his injuries were 'not survivable'.

The criminals have escaped capture despite a large-scale manhunt launched on Monday. However, police are hopeful that arrests will be made in the near future.

Dr Yung is believed to have suffered injuries to the chest, intestines and head, causing bleeding in the brain, after breaking through a glass door and being stabbed.

His family, including his two sons, a brother and a sister, are said to have granted the doctor's wish to have his organs donated as a final gift to medicine.

“He was a strong believer in organ donation,” said a close friend of Dr. Yung The advertiser.

“He had advised dozens and dozens of families over the years on the benefits of organ donation.”

The former head of the pediatric intensive care unit at the Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide had practiced medicine for almost four decades.

South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton said Dr. Yung had previously come to the aid of some of the state's “sickest children.”

“This is an incredibly sad day for the entire Women's and Children's Hospital and SA Health family,” Minister Picton wrote on X on Monday.

'Dr. Michael Yung has been there for so many South Australian children and families in their darkest times.

“Over the past few years, I have witnessed Michael's incredible intellect and compassion – completely committed to caring for our state's children.

'My thoughts are with him and his family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time.'

Dr. Yung's death is the latest tragedy for his family after his wife, Kathryn Browne-Yung, a health policy expert, died suddenly in her sleep in March 2020.

Shortly after her death, Dr. created Yung a $5,000 scholarship to support indigenous medical students in the name of his “kind, thoughtful and intelligent” wife.

More to come.
