DETROIT– A person of interest has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Detroit synagogue leader, whose death after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas sparked speculation that the killing could have been the result of anti-Semitism.
But Police Chief James White has said the attack does not appear to be the result of anti-Semitism.
The arrest is the second announced by city police since the Oct. 21 killing of 40-year-old Samantha Woll, who was found dead outside her home near downtown hours after returning from a wedding. Investigators believe the attack took place at Woll's home.
A suspect initially taken into custody was released last month without charges being filed. Detroit police did not say Sunday evening whether the suspect currently in custody is the same person arrested earlier in the case.
No other details have been released.
“We have a number of people who interest us,” White said in the days after Woll's murder. “We are just not able to name one of the people as a suspect, but we are working on it.”
Woll was president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. In addition to her work at the synagogue, Woll had worked for U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and on Attorney General Dana Nessel's political campaign.
