WFAA reported that Adamson's vehicle had been traveling the wrong way and the couple, both Navy veterans, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kristen's father Rafael Ortiz told the station that the couple, who both had children from previous relationships, were on their way home from attending a reunion with other Marines when the incident occurred.

Ortiz told the outlet that the couple moved to Texas to live closer to him and said his daughter was devoted to her children.

He said: 'They were perfect for each other, she had so many advantages, she had so many dreams, so many ambitions. Kristen was an insanely devoted mother.

'That growth process was beautiful to see and was taken away. It is difficult. It still doesn't seem real. I just spoke to her four or five hours earlier.'

Ortiz said the couple was traveling home from a reunion with other Marines at the time of the incident.

“The excitement of seeing her become the woman you always wanted your daughter to become, now knowing there is no hope for that, is nothing short of devastating. You should never bury your children,” he added.

Ortiz described his daughter and son-in-law as kindred spirits with witty personalities.

He said: “Their love was second to none. They were happy. That's the happiest I've seen my daughter as an adult. They are still happy together. I couldn't separate them.'

Kristen had been working on becoming a therapist to help former Marines transition to civilian life.
