Jamie Carragher believes Marcus Rashford is failing to fulfill his leadership duties at Manchester United and slams the struggling forward for putting in an 'unacceptable' performance against Newcastle.

Rashford signed a new £300,000-a-week contract in the summer that will keep him at United until 2028, but he has fallen short of last season's standards.

The England international has scored just two goals in the Premier League this season, his last a penalty against Everton, and was off the pace again as the Magpies sealed a 1-0 win over United at St James' Park on Saturday.

Supporters and pundits have criticized Rashford's most recent performance, highlighting a series of moments in the match against Newcastle when he failed to run back and help defensively, even when responsible for conceding possession.

United's difficult season currently leaves them outside the top four and already nine points behind leaders Arsenal, with other players alongside Rashford also falling below the necessary standards.

Carragher slammed the United winger for failing in his leadership duties as a 'local' player having grown up in Manchester, comparing him to Anthony Martial, who the former Liverpool defender claimed 'didn't care about the club'.

'They seem like big problems (at Man United). I actually can't believe where Man Untied are in the rankings,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

'Watching Marcus Rashford last night was an unacceptable performance for a few reasons.

'The boy hasn't played in the Champions League during the week, but I've been a local player and that's not easy, especially when the team isn't doing well.

“For Rashford, myself and Gerrard at Liverpool, your job is to solve the problem and drag others along with you,” he added.

'When I look at Rashford he reminds me of Martial and that's the worst thing you can say about him. A foreign player comes in and he doesn't really care. Rashford now lurks like Martial.

'As a local player it is your job to lift others up. You don't stop running for that badge and your supporters as you are supposedly one of them,” Carragher said.

The Liverpool legend further expressed his frustration at Rashford's current lack of form and compared him to Son Heung-min's performance against Man City, which he praised for being a 'leader'.

“There was a player today, Son didn't stop running. He got his goal and was involved, but when we talk about great players in this competition, Son didn't stop running today. He was a leader.

“What you ask from Rashford is leadership. Those players have to look up to him and say this is Manchester United.'
