Brisbane Lions win AFLW grand final after Dakota Davidson kicked two crucial goals to help defeat North Melbourne as reason for mysterious petrol can celebration is revealed

  • Brisbane Lions won the AFLW premiership on Sunday
  • Dakota Davidson scored two crucial goals for her team
  • It is their second premiership win in the AFLW

Injured Brisbane forward Dakota Davidson scored two goals in the final quarter to help give the Lions a stunning 17-point AFLW grand final win over North Melbourne.

After trailing by seven points at three-quarter time, the Lions avenged last year's decider defeat to Melbourne by storming home to win 7.2 (44) to 4.3 (27) for their second AFLW premiership.

Davidson was under an injury cloud all week after damaging a knee in the preliminary final win over Geelong, but stepped up when it mattered on Sunday after struggling for impact in the opening three quarters.

The 24-year-old didn't make a mistake twice in the final term after scoring two big points, converting both her set shots to swing the match in Brisbane's favour.

“That was surreal, wasn't it?” Davidson told the Seven Network.

'That fight back from the girls in that last quarter. It's unbelievable. Incredible feeling.

'The ball was not near me for the first three quarters.

“(Lions coach) Craig (Starcevich) always says it's all about moments, so I'm glad I got my two moments.”

Davidson was asked about a “gas can” that ended up on the field and was part of the team's festivities.

'What's the story behind the petrol can?' asked commentator Nat Edwards.

'We had to carry them for twenty kilometers on a hike [during pre-season],' she said.

“So whenever the going gets tough, we always throw the jerry can.

“(And then) everyone knows it's time to work hard, like we did in preseason.”

Ellie Hampson's second goal with three minutes remaining sealed the match, but Lions captain Bre Koenen added an exclamation point with a major in the final seconds.

Koenen was presented with the best on ground medal by recently retired legend Erin Phillips after finishing with 19 possessions and 10 tackles.

The 28-year-old was part of an excellent Lions defence, alongside Nat Grider and Shannon Campbell, who helped quell North's dominance in midfield.

North won the inside-50 count 34-21 and dominated the clearing 41-25, but the Lions' big game experience proved immense.

Brisbane scored just three goals through three-quarter time, but scored 4.0 and held North goalless in the final period as their fitness and attacking pressure won.

It was the Lions' fifth grand final appearance in seven completed AFLW seasons to certify themselves as the competition's true powerhouses, along with three-time premiership winners Adelaide.

Playing in the club's first major final – men's or women's – since 1999, North was superbly led by superstar midfielder Jasmine Garner.

Garner, who again missed out on the league best and fairest title despite an excellent season, set the tone for North from the center and forward.

The 29-year-old was forced to work overtime when her midfield partner Jenna Bruton injured her right foot in the opening minutes and took no further part in the match.

The Lions took the lead for the first time in the match four minutes into the third term through a classy Orla O'Dwyer snap.

But after North's Kate Shierlaw converted her set shot after an inspiring hold, Garner burst from the middle clearance and Alice O'Loughlin scored a goal to reduce the margin to seven points and put North within reach of their first AFLW premiership, before Brisbane's title. secure the final term

Koenen received three votes from all five judges for the medal for best on the ground. Garner finished with nine votes.
