Patti Newton reveals heartbreaking confession – two years on from husband Bert’s tragic death

Patti Newton made a heartbreaking confession about her legendary late husband Bert on Sunday, two years after his tragic death.

The veteran entertainer, 78, shared The Sydney Morning Herald that her late husband Bert will always be her one true love and that she is still haunted by his death in 2021.

'Bert will always be the love of my life. “I'll never stop thinking about him,” she began.

She then revealed some of the ways she has been keeping Bert's memory alive since he passed away on October 30, 2021 after a long illness.

'When Bert was in Epworth Hospital he had this little wooden cross. A friend of mine gave it to him. Bert always took it off the tray and kissed it,” she said.

“He held it for a minute and then put it down. I take him to the theater and before a performance I pick him up and kiss him.

'Like him, I hold it to my heart and say: “Come on Bert, let's move on.” He's coming on stage with me.'

The Melbourne native added that their five-decade love story began in 1966 when she was 21 and he asked her out, and the rest is history.

Patti laid her husband to rest in November 2021.

At the time of his death he was receiving palliative care at a clinic in Melbourne.

Bert was admitted to hospital in March that year and underwent surgery on his leg in May after his toe became infected before Christmas.

The infection was 'linked to his diabetes' and threatened his life, with doctors telling him the operation was a 'life or death decision'.

Doctors told Bert that if he kept the leg, he would only have “months to live” instead of years if he chose to amputate.

He is survived by children Matt and Lauren, and grandchildren Sam, Eva, Lola, Monty, Perla and Alby.
