In the bottom of the ninth inning and his team faced a loss, Aaron Judge stepped up to the plate and fired his 60th home run of the season for the New York Yankees.
In a record-breaking strike, Judge tied the score with Babe Ruth and just one behind Roger Maris, who holds the American League’s all-time record with 61. But his team trailed 8-5.
But then, with the bases loaded, Giancarlo Stanton sent the ball into the stands with a Grand Slam walk to round out a stunning 9-8 win at Yankee Stadium.
“It had a small engine on it to make sure,” Stanton said after his shot. “Judge woke us all up. He’s going to put on a show for everyone here. It’s on to the next one, it’s going to be fun to watch.’
As Judge passed the bases, there was a subdued air to his body language, while his side was still out to get beat.
But he didn’t know he’d lit his team. Anthony Rizzo doubled, Gleyber Torres walked and Josh Donaldson walked to load the bases and then Stanton duly caused the Yankees to celebrate quickly.
He sent a massive hit over the left field wall to complete a blowback that sealed a historic night.
Judge’s night started off quietly in his 60’s chase, even though it ended in fireworks. Judge has now reached 60 runs in 147 games – the fastest Yankee in history – and he is moving on the same level as the legendary Ruth and his achievement of 95 years ago.
The Yankees return to action against Pittsburgh on Wednesday-evening, then play four games against rivals the Red Sox, all at Yankee Stadium.
