Right-handed pitcher Luis Severino has signed a one-year, $13 million contract to pack up and move across the Triborough Bridge to Citi Field and the New York Mets.
Severino – who made his major league debut with the New York Yankees in 2015 and has played his entire career in Pinstripes – will now join cross-town rivals the Bronx Bombers, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Passan also says the deal makes the righty pitcher eligible for up to $2 million in performance bonuses.
It’s been a rough few years for Severino’s career as he’s dealt with multiple arm injuries that have caused him to miss a lot of playing time.
This is also a bit of a head-scratcher when you look at recent performances. Severino posted an ERA of 6.65 last year.

But he has posted a career win-loss record of 54-37 and an ERA of 3.79, along with 788 strikeouts.
Severino joined the Yankees as a free agent in 2011 and played in their farm system for several years.
His debut against the rival Boston Red Sox came in 2015 – a season in which he pitched 11 games in the major leagues.
Though he’s a productive fastball pitcher with a quick-turning slider, Severino’s injury history reads like a shopping list: triceps inflammation in 2016, rotator cuff inflammation in 2019, a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery, keeping him out of all of 2020 and nearly had to miss all of 2020. the 2021 season, a lat trunk in 2022 and a high-quality oblique trunk in 2023.
Since being named an all-star in back-to-back seasons in 2018, Severino has not pitched more than 20 games or logged more than 105 innings pitched.
