I had my life together and was going places. Then I spiralled into drugs and alcohol and bashed myself in a booze-fuelled rage. Here’s my warning to the kids of Australia: Don’t become an eshay

A Tasmanian man who gave himself two black eyes after smashing his head into a wall during an alcohol-fuelled rampage has issued a grim warning to children in Australia after his life spiraled out of control.

Battered and bruised Jeremy Slattery, 32, shared an honest story about his difficult life of drug and alcohol addiction in an interview with Based in Sydney YouTube star Jamie Zhu for an online documentary.

Speaking to Ny Breaking Australia, Jeremy, who was dubbed an eshay by viewers, has issued a stark warning to young people who may follow a similarly destructive path.

‘Stay in school and don’t use drugs. Now you might think it’s cool, but in five years you might just have a needle in your arm,” he began.

“You don’t want to be my age and start a detox for the eighth time.”

Jeremy Slattery says he is hopeful about his future ahead of his eighth stint in detox

The father-of-one, who lives in Sandy Bay, Hobart, said he is now waiting for a place in rehab to tackle his substance abuse problems once and for all.

β€œI have hope,” he said.

“I’m going to detox not only for myself and my family, but also for the hundreds of people who want me to do well.”

He has promised to turn his life around and has now launched a campaign GoFundMe in an attempt to buy a car so he can see his seven-year-old son, who lives 200 miles away in the northern Tasmanian town of Burnie.

β€œOne thing I have managed to hold on to all these years is my driver’s license and buying a car has allowed me to make arrangements to see my son,” Jeremy said.

‘Life is going in the right direction, I work with a drug and alcohol counselor and I have a safe support network.’

Jeremy’s life spiraled out of control at the age of 17 when he was an apprentice mechanic and his drinking – including binge eating during lunch breaks and every evening after work – turned him into an alcoholic.

He started using crystal methamphetamine – better known as drug ice – and ended up on the streets of Hobart.

β€œI was raised well, I had a good childhood growing up in the bush, but for whatever reason I made bad choices along the way,” he said.

Jeremy became visibly emotional and full of regret during his interview with Zhu when asked what advice he had for his younger self.

‘Stay, do better at school. I wish I could go back to school, you know?

‘… stop fooling around and making your life harder for you in the future.

“Listen to your father and listen to the advice he gave you.”

Jeremy explained that he gave himself black eyes after spending the night in a police cell several days earlier.

He had been arrested for ‘apparently assaulting a police officer’.

β€œI was heavily drunk and thought it would be a good idea to hit my head against the wall,” he said.

‘I was stripped naked. I was left in the cell with nothing, so in protest I started hitting my head against the wall.”

The video has struck a chord with many people who were touched by his vulnerability and flocked to his Facebook page to offer their support.

‘I saw your video too Jeremy. You seem intelligent and a real guy. I really hope you stick with it and follow your father’s advice and what he wanted for you.” wrote one commenter, adding.

β€œYou can be a living example by showing your son that anything can be achieved in this life if you really want it; let your son drive you, buddy. Do not give up.’
