Antoine Griezmann has played down speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United as he admits he wants to become an Atletico Madrid ‘legend’.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a revival in Diego Simeone’s new Atletico team.

Griezmann has scored eight goals in 12 games so far this season as his side sit fourth in La Liga behind classic rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid and surprise leaders Girona.

He was initially linked with a move to United when Jose Mourinho was in the dugout, but opted to join Spanish rivals Barcelona.

The experienced France international has suffered a terrible few years at the Camp Nou, but now that he is back at Atleti, he appears to have his sights firmly set on cementing his legacy in the capital.

Speaking to Marca, Griezmann said: ‘I have to earn myself to become a legend at this club. That’s my mission.

‘By 2024, I want to bring joy to the fans and bring Atlético a title. It would be a dream.’

Griezmann clearly intends to stay in Spain and has no plans to move in January, but he has been linked with a move to England for years.

This will be a blow to Erik ten Hag, who is looking for more reinforcements for his attacking line.

United are looking to lighten the load on new £72million signing Rasmus Hojlund and could look to sign an experienced and versatile player in January.

Hojlund has been a success in Europe, scoring five goals in the Champions League, but has yet to get off the ground in the competition.

Ten Hag also faces a dilemma with Griezmann’s international teammate Raphael Varane, with the ‘unfortunate’ centre-back linked with a move to German giants Bayern Munich.

The Dutchman has denied a conflict with Varane but has consistently chosen Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans over the Frenchman to partner Harry Maguire.
