PDP, Congress protest against ‘worsening’ power crisis in Kashmir

Leaders and workers of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) protested outside the party office here on Thursday against the electricity crisis in Kashmir, officials said here.

The PDP workers, led by Asiaa Naqash, Abdul Qayoom Bhat and Arif Laigroo, attempted to march towards Lal Chowk from the PDP office near Sher-e-Kashmir Park here to protest against electricity shortage in the valley at the beginning of the long winter period. .

However, a posse of police officers prevented the protesters, carrying placards and posters demanding an end to the power outage, from marching outside the adjacent General Post Office (GPO).

To wake the government from a deep sleep, the PDP workers and leaders from Srinagar staged a protest today. Kashmir has been plunged into darkness due to the worsening power crisis, PDP spokesperson Mohit Bhan said.

The residents are undergoing endless hardships and the incompetence of the JK government is glaring. Basic needs have been affected and yet those responsible seem to be unaware of it, Bhan added.

Meanwhile, workers of the Pradesh Congress Committee here also tried to protest against the power crisis at Maulana Azad Road but were prevented from leaving their party office by police.

There is no electricity supply even in the hospitals while they (officials) spend money moving around the city, said one of the protesters.
