Melbourne stabbing: Man critical after altercation at CBD tram stop

A man is fighting for his life after he was allegedly stabbed in front of shocked bystanders near a busy tram stop in the Melbourne CBD.

It is understood he was stabbed after a verbal altercation with another man in Elizabeth Street at around 9.20pm on Wednesday evening.

The man, in his thirties, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The other man, 21, was arrested at the scene and continues to be questioned by police. No charges have been filed yet.

It is not known whether the two men knew each other or whether it was… random attack.

Melbourne’s CBD was packed with people at the time, including Robbie Williams concertgoers heading home.

Victorian police have launched an investigation after the tram stop was cordoned off as a crime scene.

Forensic officers spent the night investigating the scene.
