Police have arrested an alleged sex offender in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after a dramatic chase.

Officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Command attempted to speak to a man in Roscoe Street, Bondi, about 3.45pm on Wednesday about an alleged sexual offense that took place on the state’s central coast earlier this month.

It will be alleged the 48-year-old man ran from police before being located in Curlewis Street, Bondi, at 4.45pm, with the help of additional resources.

It has been reported that the incident caused a local daycare to go into lockdown.

The man was arrested and taken to Waverley Police Station where he is currently assisting with inquiries.

Footage of the incident shows a man being led away by police in his underwear amid a heavy police presence.

Video footage taken by a local resident and shared on social media shows a helicopter hovering in the sky in the area on Wednesday afternoon.

Police and police cars can be seen in the area and sirens can be heard.

The local resident who captured the footage claimed in one video that an arrest had taken place on a rooftop.

Witness Leah Simmons told 9 News the man had tried to take refuge outside her home.

“He was sitting at my front door holding my son’s boogie board with a towel over him,” she said.

“I shouted at the police that he was there and he pushed me away and then ran around the side of the house.”
