There will still be a gap between the blue and green bubbles, but texting between iPhone and Android users is set to become more fun.

Apple has revealed that it will add a new messaging standard “later next year” to allow Android owners to use some iMessage features.

This change will allow both operating systems to experience read receipt, writing indicators, and improved media sharing.

Apple is set to add support for the RCS (Rich Communications Services) standard in a software update later next year.

Apple has revealed that it will add a new messaging standard “later next year” to allow Android owners to use some iMessage features.

The update was first revealed by 9to5MacIt’s also Apple’s way of appeasing the EU’s Digital Markets Act passed in 2020, which prevents “gatekeepers from imposing unfair terms on businesses and end users.”

This means that companies like Apple must make services available on all platforms, even on their competing Android devices.

DailyMail.com has contacted Apple for comment.

In a statement to 9to5 Mac, an Apple spokesperson said: β€œLater next year, we will add support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard currently published by the GSM Association.”

β€œWe believe RCS Universal Profile will provide a better interoperability experience compared to SMS or MMS.

β€œThis will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”

Google rolled out RCS to its US customers in 2019, including read receipts, typing indicators, and using WiFi to send messages.

The move was to compete with the likes of iMessage and Facebook Messenger.

But the standard is not compatible with Apple Messages.

However, Apple is not inviting Android users to the platform but is adding RCS separately.

RCS is designed to replace the Short Messaging (SMS) standard and has been developed since 2007 with the assistance of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) trade body.

The report said that Apple has been retreating from adopting RCS for more than a year, even as Google and others pressured the iPhone maker to adopt this technology.
