Former McDonald’s chef reveals whether chain’s Filet-O-Fish is REALLY ‘getting smaller’ – after claims the divisive burger is turning into a ‘tiny slider’

A former McDonald’s chef has revealed whether claims that the chain’s Filet-O-Fish is “getting smaller” are actually true.

Mike Haracz, who worked for the franchise until 2019, turned to TikTok after being “tagged in a number of videos” and asked to respond to speculation that the signature burger was starting to look more like a “little slider.”

The Illinois-based content creator decided to order the item for himself at the drive-thru before admitting that it did indeed look “small.”

And other social media users quickly flocked to the comments to share their own thoughts on the revelation.

In the TikTok video, which he shared with his 209,300 followers, Mike began his playful investigation by asking, “Is the Filet-O-Fish getting smaller?”

He explained how recent images from other customers showed the menu item looking “much smaller” than he remembered.

“I’m not sure what’s going on, so I decided that right now I’m just going to go to McDonald’s, buy a Filet-O-Fish and see what it looks like,” he stated.

The former chef recorded himself picking up the order for a single sandwich that cost $5.42 including tax.

The burger consists of a steamed bun, fish fillet, half a slice of cheese and sauce.

He said, “I haven’t been to Subway in a while, but for about that price could you get a 6 inch sub with a lot more produce and other stuff on it? I mean, it seems a little expensive.”

Mike then opened the box before noting that it’s “definitely bigger” than in some other customer videos, but added, “It’s still definitely small.”

‘This looks average. Actually, the fillet itself looks a little thinner than normal. Tastes like a Filet-O-Fish,” he added.

Most of his followers agreed that the size of the burger has decreased over time, as one wrote, “It’s DEFINITELY getting smaller.”

‘The last time I saw one it was a rectangle and not a square like years ago. Seems like trimming an edge gets six out of five fish,” another person added.

A third person wrote: ‘They have definitely and recently shrunk. I laughed when I got one recently.”

“I had one two days ago but the bun was definitely smaller when I had it,” a fourth person wrote.

“They were always small, even in the 1970s when I ate them,” confessed another.

But on the other hand, other followers didn’t think the item changed much in size.

“It seems basic to me,” one foodie wrote, while another person commented: “It honestly seems the same to me.” Price has become absolutely ridiculous.”

One person had a theory for the decrease in size, writing, “Maybe they make the fillet thinner because they have a double fish fillet.”

The debate comes after Neily Bob, a US-based content creator, posted a video of the Filet-O-Fish and wrote in the caption: “McDonald’s Fish Filet is the latest victim of #shrinkflation.”

According to the Corporate Finance Institute, shrinkflation occurs when the size of an item decreases while the price remains the same or increases.

The foodie held up the burger, showed his followers a 360-degree view of it and said: ‘It was already small. The Filet-O-Fish has shrunk by, I would say, 20 percent.

“It’s comically smaller. I know I have big hands, but that’s ridiculous.’

But American foodies aren’t the only ones bringing up McDonald’s apparent shrinkage.

An Australian customer posted a photo of the Filet-O-Fish between a McChicken and beef burger to compare sizes.

The person wrote on a discounted Facebook group: “Has McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish always been this small? I don’t remember it being such a mini kid size.’

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: ‘There are no changes to the size of the burgers.’
