A celebrity makeup artist has revealed the big mistake many people make when applying foundation – as she shares the simple step that can completely change the look of your makeup.
Katie Jane Hughes is an editorial makeup artist who has worked her magic on stars like Ashley Graham, Hailey Bieber, Karlie Kloss and Emmy Rossum, and is also the founder of her own makeup company, KJH.brand.
However, her work is not just limited to celebrities. Hughes regularly shares her own expert beauty tips and tricks with viewers on her social media pages, such as her foundation hack posted to TikTok this week.
“Don’t apply your foundation like that,” Hughes bluntly began the clip, as she showed herself applying the makeup to her face with a foundation brush.

βPut it on like this,β she instructed as she demonstrated the technique, which involved simply rubbing the brush with the product on it in the palm of her hand several times.
After warming the brush in the palm of her hand, she then applied her foundation.
Hughes explained that this was called “priming the brush” and that it can make your foundation last even longer.
“By thoroughly putting the product into the brush and then saturating the face with what’s in that brush, you don’t have to fight to blend all that product,” the makeup artist said.
The expert revealed that there would be several benefits to applying your foundation in this particular way.
“You will notice that it will make you feel better, your makeup will look even more natural and it will look like you had your makeup done by a professional makeup artist,” she said.
She even added that working with a foundation color that wasn’t quite the perfect match could save your skin.
“And this technique is perfect if your shadow is a little off,” Hughes explained.

Hughes said using this technique will make your foundation last longer and look more “natural.”

She compared the result to something that almost looked like a filtered view.
“By priming the brush you simply don’t have to blend the product in because your brush almost becomes a retouching tool in Photoshop,” Hughes told DailyMail.com.
So far, the celebrity makeup artist has clocked over two million views on the video.
In the comments section of her TikTok post, some were fascinated by the discovery, while others said it “changed the game for them.”

βIt’s not a waste,β the makeup artist explained. ‘It doesn’t just disappear into thin air. It stays in the brush and you can use it later in the routine.’
This isn’t the only viral trick the makeup artist has shared in the past.
In 2020, the pro explained how to use a simple face cream to highlight your face.
She used the popular Skin Food cream from the Weleda brand and applied it to the highest points of her face: forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and chin.
