Australia’s biggest brewery evacuated after fumes detected at Gold Coast worksite

Carlton & United Breweries’ Gold Coast brewery had to be evacuated in an emergency after reports of ‘burning eyes’ sparked fears over chemical fumes.

More than 100 staff were evacuated from the Yatala site, in the north of the city, at around 7am on Thursday after staff began complaining of a strange ‘smell’.

Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of fumes.

One male employee was taken to Logan Hospital in a stable condition and another was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Firefighters from the brewery, Australia’s largest, carried out atmospheric tests for possible chemical fumes.

“Around 7am, the Yatala Brewery was evacuated after workers complained of stinging eyes and an odor,” a CUB spokesperson said 7News.

‘Although some of our staff have sore eyes and some have undergone treatment, they are now safe and well.’

CUB said the “root cause of the problem” was still under investigation.

“We cannot confirm at this time if the issue is coming from our site,” the website said.

‘Brewery operations will resume after QFES has made everything clear.’
