Modern Warfare 3 is the game Sledgehammer has “always wanted to make”, creative director says
The creative director of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2023)Sledgehammer Games’ Dave Swenson has teased that the upcoming FPS is “the game we always wanted to make,” which is an exciting prospect for fans of the series.
Swenson recently told Ny Breaking Gaming interview with himself and narrative designer Shelby Carleton. In the interview he specifically referred to the Open Combat Missions that were present in MW3‘s campaign, which allows players to approach story missions in different ways (for example, they can try something stealthily or with shooting weapons). He noted that as storytellers, the team loves “telling a compelling story, but in an interactive medium,” and giving players more agency can make stories more engaging.
“I think what makes things compelling is that players have some choice and can choose how they get there,” he explained. “So making one Duty level where it has the whole story, has the whole character, but now I’m not kind of being pulled along, but instead it’s using my agency, my choice, on how we get there. That was the original thought, right? That it would be so cool if we could do that.”
For everyone who has reserved a digital version of Modern Warfare 3thanks to the campaign it is now possible to play the entire story early access period, which started yesterday (November 2). This means fans have a full week to enjoy the single player before the full game – complete with multiplayer and the highly anticipated Zombies mode – releases on November 10.
