Eddie Howe has admitted using the final minutes of Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Manchester United as a ‘training session’.

Newcastle inflicted further misery on the hosts after their Manchester derby defeat by ending their Carabao Cup defense in the fourth round.

Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall struck in the first half, with substitute Joe Willock adding a third on the hour mark.

Howe was questioned after the match about his decision to bring on regulars Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes four minutes after taking a 3–0 lead.

The Newcastle boss also brought on captain Kieran Trippier for the final 15 minutes of the match.

As reported by the timesHowe said ‘the idea was to give players minutes so they could use them as training’.

Howe’s comments underlined his side’s dominance at Old Trafford, with the Newcastle boss looking forward to future tests.

The statement will be another blow to Man United boss Erik ten Hag, who is under increasing pressure after another dismal defeat.

Newcastle faced another tough test in the draw, having eliminated both Manchester clubs in successive rounds.

The Magpies will travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the quarter-finals as they look to go one step further after losing last year’s final to Manchester United.

Howe’s side return to the Premier League on Saturday when they host second-placed Arsenal, who remain unbeaten in the Premier League.

Man United travel to Fulham as the Red Devils try to ease the pressure on Ten Hag.

United go into the match ninth in the Premier League, eight points behind the top four.
