Woke Chicago lawmaker is mocked for wearing ‘eat the rich’ t-shirt despite earning $130,000 – $70,000 more than average salary in Windy City

A woke Chicago lawmaker has been mocked for wearing an “eat the rich” T-shirt despite earning a $130,000 salary.

A photo of Northwest Side Councilwoman Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez was posted to X (formally known as Twitter) as she donned a black “eat the rich” shirt at a recent event.

Sanchez was quickly ridiculed for her choice of clothing, as she earns $70,000 more than the average salary of Chicagoans.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and 48 aldermen will receive raises in 2024 even as the city faces a budget deficit of more than $500 million.

Sanchez, from the 33rd Ward, was one of only two city officials who refused to accept a pay increase.

The two officials then sent signed statements to the city’s Office of Budget Management rejecting the pay increase.

Before coming to power, Sanchez worked as a youth educator and engaged with community groups as an organizer and activist.

She is also a mother and resident of Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood.

According to the councilwoman’s website, some of her priorities for her community include “protecting neighborhood affordability, supporting our neighborhood’s immigrant population, youth, and diverse communities, and creating more democratic processes so neighborhood residents are involved in the decisions that affect their lives. .’

In July, anger erupted after Sanchez posted a pole online with new ideas for monuments to represent Chicago’s Italian-American heritage.

Her then-Twitter post offered brainstorming ideas for monuments, such as an espresso machine, a statue of Columbus, an Italian ice monument, and a space to suggest “other” ideas.

One person pitched the idea for a cannoli monument and in response, Sanchez said, “How I missed this! Yes.’

Although she received a dramatic backlash for her 1,800-vote poll, many Italian-American leaders in Chicago found her post “offensive.”

Lou Rago, president of the Chicago-based Italian American Human Relations Foundation, said Chicago Tribune: ‘This is purely racist and unacceptable.’

In response to the tweetstorm, Sánchez strayed from an apology and instead admitted that the poll was meant to be “playful” and “lighthearted.”

She added that it had all been “twisted into a story of disrespect.”

The lawmaker also took it upon herself to visit a new shelter that opened in her district and address the issue of overworked workers.

The Chicago Tribune reported that when Sanchez was on her way to the Brands Park shelter, she was told to “schedule a visit in advance.”

‘They couldn’t keep me out. I still went through the door and said, ‘No, I’m not leaving,'” Sánchez said.

The councilor insisted that Favorite Staffing employees at that shelter and others in the city worked so much overtime because of the “corporate mindset.”

Sanchez went on to talk about how Chicago libraries should remain inclusive and avoid “conservative thoughts” during a budget meeting.

In the meeting she said: ‘I think this is closely linked to the budget. What do we need to ensure a robust system that strengthens our city’s critical thinking?’

The legislature also went this far in 2020 send a letter to Joe Biden He urged the president not to admit Rahm Emanuel to his government.

Sanchez said the Chicago community “erupted in cheers” when Biden was announced as president, comparing it to the city’s response to Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago, leaving office.

She then talked about how Rahm Emanuel was highly ridiculed by the city community and gave specific examples of what he did.

She alleged that Emanuel “covered up the 2014 police killing of seventeen-year-old Laquan McDonald.”

She then said he also closed 50 public schools and half of the city’s mental health clinics, among other cases.

In August, Sanchez signed off on a nonprofit developer’s plan to build 100 percent affordable housing in Irving Park for Indigenous people. Block Club Chicago reported.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Sanchez is the first Latinx councilor to represent Chicago’s 33rd Ward and chairs the immigration committee of the City Council’s Latino Caucus. She is also a member of the Progressive Caucus.

“Councilwoman Rodriguez-Sanchez has been a lifelong advocate for public education, labor rights, and the well-being of youth and families,” according to her website.

In 2021, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines when she wore a white dress that said “Tax the Rich” in red paint to the Met Gala.

Ethics investigators investigated her after her unforgettable performance and revealed that they have “substantial reason to believe” that AOC violated ethics with her presence.

Some conservative groups also asked the committee to investigate whether the Democratic congresswoman from New York was paid $35,000 for the gala.

According to investigators, AOC staff did not pay for her rental dress, makeup and other accessories until February 2022, almost a year after the gala.
