Tesla to grow Gigafactory Texas as it marks 2 MILLION cars made in California and Nevada factories

>

Tesla is expanding its already-massive Gigafactory Texas as the company marks 2 million cars produced at its Nevada and Fremont factories.

The electric carmaker is planning to build on 68-acre plot of land that’s next to the factory’s main property – for the purpose of ‘industrial use facilities with associated improvements’ – according to the City of Austin filings.

Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent a congratulatory tweet regarding Tesla’s Fremont and Nevada factories for having assembled two million cars.

‘Congrats to Tesla Fremont + Giga Nevada for making their 2 millionth car!’ the billionaire wrote.

‘To think that Fremont was just a derelict building & Giga Nevada was just rocks & bushes when started!

‘California used to have a dozen car factories. NUMMI was last to close. Now, Tesla Fremont is the biggest car factory in North America!’

In response to a message on Twitter from Teslarati’s Johnna Crider, who quote tweeted a Reuters story about GM producing its 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV in Mexico and mentioned President Biden’s having ‘snubbed’ Musk, the technology mogul said:

‘Teslas are the most made-in-USA vehicles’

Before Tesla purchased the space in Fremont, California in 2010, it was home to GM and Toyota’s New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.

Now the Fremont factory contains 5.3 million square feet of manufacturing and office space for almost 22,000 employees on 370 acres of land – with plans to continue expanding.

The facility has churned out the vast majority of Tesla’s Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles.

The Nevada factory produces Model 3 electric motors and battery packs, as well as Tesla’s energy storage products – Powerwall and Powerpack.

The Gigafactory Texas, which Musk has said is the US manufacturing hub for Model Y and the future home of Cybertruck, sits on 2,500 acres near the Colorado River and contains over 10 million square feet of space.

Late last month, Musk said his factories in the US are ‘losing billions of dollars’ due to supply chain woes and battery shortages.

‘This factory is losing insane money right now,’ he explained. ‘We should be operating a lot more cars from this factory versus a very puny amount of cars.’

‘Both Berlin and Austin factories are gigantic money furnaces right now. Okay? It’s really like a giant roaring sound, which is the sound of money on fire,’ he told members of a club of Silicon Valley Tesla owners in Austin in an interview published Wednesday.

Musk said Tesla’s Texas factory produces a ‘tiny’ number of cars because of challenges in boosting production of its new ‘4680’ batteries and as tools to make its conventional 2170 batteries are ‘stuck in port in China.’

‘This is all going to get fixed real fast, but it requires a lot of attention.

‘It will take more effort to get this factory into high line production than it took to build it in the first place.’

Tesla’s overwhelming concern, he said, is ‘How do we keep the factories operating so we can pay people and not go bankrupt?’

WHAT IS TESLA’S ‘GIGAFACTORY’?

Tesla’s latest Gigafactory in the United States is located in Austin, Texas near the Colorado River.

The factory’s name stems from ‘giga,’ a unit of measurement that represents billions.

One gigawatt hour is the equivalent of generating one billion watts for one hour — one million times that of one kilowatt hour.

The factory covers 2,500 acres with over 10 million square feet of factory floor and will be a manufacturing hub for Model Y and future home of Cybertruck.

That’s the equivalent to the entire world’s production in 2014.

New York City uses around 52 gigawatt hours of energy per year.

Tesla also operates extremely large factories in Nevada, New York, Berlin and Shanghai.
