Who should pay on a first date? I couldn’t believe the text I woke up to from a man the morning after he paid for our night out
A young woman has shared her furious reaction to a man who asked to split the bill – the day after a ‘mediocre’ first date.
The woman, Anna, said she had offered to split the bill that evening, but he had refused, demanding only twice as much the next day.
She explained that the total bill was $100, but her portion was only $25. Jason earned the rest by buying himself some extra drinks.
The next day he messaged Anna: ‘I had a great time last night! After thinking about it, I think I’ll involve you in splitting the dinner. I’m going to the game today and didn’t know I spent so much last night. Can you send me $50?β
Anna was shocked at the audacity and refused, claiming her offer ‘expired’ as soon as they left the restaurant.
Jason ordered so many drinks on the date that he earned more than $75 for his share of the check.
A woman offered to pay for her own food after a mediocre first date, but the man refused at the time – and demanded double the amount the next morning
Many were shocked. Jason asked Anna to cover a significant portion of his own bill.
‘Paying for yourself is not the same as splitting the bill. You pay for what you ate and drank, he pays for what he ate and drank. You shouldn’t have to pay for him,β one person said.
‘As a frugal person, ‘splitting the bill’ is worthless. I get a reasonably priced item, the other person orders like they’re rich. No thanks, I will not subsidize your dessert covered in gold flakes,β another shared.
βWhat a damn clown, every day I wonder what people like this are really like, there are so many titled guys in the world,β one woman said.
‘This person has no shame whatsoever. That’s shameful as a man to even ask a woman to half join you on a dinner date,β one man wrote.
βThe level of shame I feel for the man is unprecedented,β another added.
But there was a sinister theory as to why Jason returned.
βHe probably offered to pay because he thought if he paid the entire bill, she would be more likely to come home with him. Then he asked for the money the next day when he no longer had to impress her,β one man wrote.
Others insisted that people pay for themselves on dates.
βWe need to normalize that everyone just pays for their own stuff on a date,β one man said.
βI went on a date to a soba noodle restaurant once,β one woman said. βI got a $15 bowl of soup, the guy got $70 worth of sushi for himself and expected to split it. Hard no from me!’
