Pioneer Valley plane crash: Two die after light aircraft crashes near Finch Hatton

Two people have been killed after a light aircraft crashed into a mountain range in regional Queensland.

A man and a woman, aged 73 and 75, are believed to have been on board but are not expected to survive the crash, which occurred on Saturday in the Pioneer Ranges, west of Mackay.

Emergency services were alerted at around 9am on Saturday after witnesses reported seeing the plane crash near Finch Hatton.

An RACQ spokesperson described the crash site as ‘unsurvivable’.

RACQ CQ Rescue teams are attempting to gain access to the remote location.

It is believed the elderly couple crashed in a “mountainous, inaccessible area” near Finch Hatton, 63km west of Mackay, on Saturday morning.

The Australian Transport and Safety Bureau was notified of the accident and is launching an investigation.
