African woman who attended her ‘first European wedding’ in Germany is accused of ‘outshining the bride’ with her ‘extravagant, inappropriate’ gown – so, do YOU think it’s ‘OTT’?

An African woman has been accused of ‘outdoing’ the bride at the first ‘European wedding’ she attended.

The 27-year-old woman took to Reddit to say she was ridiculed after wearing a green dress to a German wedding despite asking if there was a dress code.

She explained that she had lived in Germany for some time and had struck up a friendship with her 60-year-old colleague, who invited her to her daughter’s wedding.

Since she was told to ‘dress to impress’, the 27-year-old donned an embellished green dress, but she now wonders if she was wrong about the matter. Am I the hole? subreddit after being punched by her co-worker and the bride.

β€œSo I, 27F, am a black African woman. I live and work in Germany for a certain period of time,” she said at the beginning of the post.

She then explained that while working in Germany, she became “quite friendly” with a 60-year-old colleague who invited her to her daughter’s wedding.

The African woman added: β€œI was excited because I have never been to a white wedding. I asked if there was a dress code/color scheme I had to adhere to as it was not stated on the invitation. I was told the code is ‘dress to impress.’

On the day of the wedding, she showed up in a green dress and thought she “understood the brief.”

She saw her colleague at the wedding and noticed that she seemed “colder” than usual, but she didn’t pay attention.

β€œThe bride is downright rude to me, but again, I give her grace,” she said.

The 27-year-old added: ‘I stick to the edges of the room because the music isn’t really my vibe, and I’m just looking at how European weddings work.

“I’m leaving around 8pm (after 5pm) and going home before the wedding is over.”

When she returned to work on Monday, she noticed that her colleagues were “more reserved than normal.”

She noted that one of her friends at the office took her aside and explained that the bride’s mother was “seething” because her green dress was “too extravagant.”

The 60-year-old accused her of ‘getting the bride’s attention’, being ‘rude’ and ‘disrespectful’.

The wedding guest noted that she asked her colleague to talk to her privately, but she declined.

‘I explained to everyone who cursed me that this was my first white wedding: I specifically asked what to wear and followed the guidelines. Where I come from, there’s no such thing as outdoing the bride; weddings are a fashion show and a chance to wear your best and most beautiful clothes,” she noted.

However, her colleague joked back, “This isn’t Africa,” and told her that people in Germany “have manners.”

At the end of the post, she wondered if she was an asshole.

Luckily, people on the internet came to her rescue and slapped her colleague.

One person said: ‘Your dress was beautiful – you followed the instructions! I would be honored if you were present at my wedding. Your friend is not your friend…I’m so sorry! Hold your head high and let your beauty shine. Not that hole.”

Another user added: ‘Exactly. They said dress to impress and you understood the brief. They failed.”

Someone else commented: ‘I think some women are just insecure and petty. As long as you’re not dressed in white, I think you should be fine! Weddings are an event to have fun, dress up and celebrate the new couple!’

One Redditor wrote: ‘I’m from Italy and here weddings are basically fashion shows, in fact it’s advisable to dress the best you can!

“You only outshine the bride if you wear white.”

‘Big time, not that hole. Upload a photo of your dress now,” said one commenter.

Another Redditor added: ‘How boring was the bride if that would top her?! Your dress is beautiful and in my opinion very subtle and fitting.’

Someone else said, β€œYou know what, my opinion is that your coworker is just setting you up. No matter what you wear, it would always be a gossip!’
