Controversial surgery: what is a hymenoplasty?

The procedure treats a torn or torn hymen and takes an hour.

Patients receive local anesthesia and oral sedation.

During the operation, “extremely precise incisions” are made “in the vagina and the remnants of the hymeneal ring to bring them close together so that delicate sutures can hold the tissue in place.”

Side effects during the first 24 to 28 hours include swelling and minor bleeding.

Patients can return to work the next day, but ‘strenuous activities’ should be avoided for six weeks.
