Britney Spears broke her silence about the double denim outfits she and Justin Timberlake rocked in 2001.

The ‘Toxic’ hitmaker and the NSYNC member – who were dating at the time – attended the American Music Awards in coordinated chambray ensembles and the head-to-toe look has now become an iconic part of pop culture sartorial history.

The 41-year-old singer recalled the moment she suggested the look to her stylist in her new memoir The Woman in Me, claiming she presented it as a joke.

“I still can’t believe Justin started wearing denim and I said, ‘We gotta match! Let’s do denim-on-denim!'” Britney wrote.

“Honestly, I thought it was a joke at first,” she continued. “I never thought my stylist would actually do it, and I never thought Justin would do it with me. But they both went for it.”

Then she remembered her stylist brought the “all-denim outfit.”

“When he put it on, I thought, wow! I think we’re really doing this!’

During that period, the pop star had recently risen to fame, while Justin was a global heartthrob leading the boy band NSYNC. During their relationship from 1998 to 2002, they attended numerous red carpet events together.

“Justin and I always went to events together,” Britney added in her book. “We had so much fun doing the Teen Choice Awards, and we often color-coordinated our outfits. But we blew it up with the matching denim.”

She also commented on the criticism Justin received for the denim fun.

‘I heard that Justin was criticized for his appearance. On a podcast where they teased him about it, he said, “You do a lot of things when you’re young and in love.” And that’s exactly right. We were giddy, and those outfits reflected that,” Britney wrote.

She added, “I understand it was tacky, but it was also pretty awesome in its own way, and I’m also happy to see it parodied as a Halloween costume.”

While driving through the desert in a convertible with a friend, the ‘Toxic’ hitmaker was struck by the mystical moment, writing ‘an eerie feeling came over me’.

She later described it as “a profound beauty, otherworldly and humbling.”
