Man DISLOCATES his testicle in freak, deadly motorcycle accident
- The unidentified man in Wuhan suffered serious internal injuries and bleeding
- There was a ‘violent’ impact between his scrotum and the fuel tank of his bicycle
A 67-year-old man died after a motorcycle accident that crushed his scrotum and dislocated his testicle.
The man, who was not identified by doctors, plowed into it the back of a van while speeding Wuhan, China.
He suffered severe internal injuries and bleeding, which led to organ failure.
He was admitted to hospital almost immediately and underwent a series of checks and scans, but later died while undergoing tests.
Doctors reported that the ‘violent’ impact of his scrotum against the fuel tank of his bicycle forced his testicle into his groin and caused ‘severe’ internal bleeding.
A team from Tongji Medical College wrote that the crash resulted in a “violent impact” between the man’s perineum and the motorcycle’s fuel tank (circled) – known as a straddle injury.
The man was speeding on a city road when he “violently collided” with the back of a truck, according to a case report in the Journal of forensic and legal medicine.
He complained of abdominal pain, difficulty moving his waist, pain in his left knee and tailbone, inability to sit upright and dizziness after the fall.
About an hour later he was admitted to hospital.
Doctors noticed that the patient had bruising around his abdomen, but that he had a normal temperature, heart rate and sensation in his perineum – the area between the scrotum and the anus.
While undergoing a CT scan, the man suddenly experienced palpitations, sweating, cold extremities, a weak pulse, low blood pressure and a high heart rate.
The patient was rushed to the emergency department but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead four hours after the accident.
An autopsy a week later concluded that his cause of death was traumatic hemorrhagic shock, due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Hemorrhagic shock occurs due to severe bleeding, which is often internal and not immediately apparent.
As a result, organs have difficulty getting essential oxygen and nutrients, which can cause them to fail.
A team from Tongji Medical College wrote that the crash resulted in a “violent impact” between the man’s perineum and the motorcycle’s fuel tank, known as a straddle injury.
This caused his pubic symphysis – the joint between the pelvic bones – to disintegrate, injured his scrotum, dislocated his left testicle – which was pushed out of the scrotum into the groin – and caused internal bleeding and bruising.
While dislocation usually refers to bones being pushed out of place, testicular dislocation occurs when something forces the testicles out of their normal position in the scrotum.
The phenomenon is so rare that there are no figures on how often it occurs. However, research shows that eight out of ten cases are caused by motorcycle accidents.
The blood supply to the scrotum is “very rich,” meaning bleeding caused by a scrotal injury is “very serious,” they noted.
They said pelvic fractures and bleeding from his scrotal injury caused the man’s death.
Straddle injuries are often difficult to recognize, meaning patients can be misdiagnosed and at risk of death, the medics wrote.
The team said doctors should consider that a patient may have suffered internal injuries and bleeding after a crash and restrict their movements to reduce the risk of bleeding or secondary fractures.
