Queensland bushfire: Residents told to evacuate now as blaze burns through state

Residents have been ordered to evacuate Queensland’s Western Downs as fast-moving fires burning in the state’s south-west have been raised to emergency alert levels.

There are about 28 fires burning in the state, and with temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius in Tara on Tuesday, conditions will remain challenging for firefighters.

Lenny Sava, a resident of Tara, said today that his house was ‘burnt to ashes’ after fires destroyed his property.

“As I drove down the road there were flames licking the trees,” he said Tuesday.

“I got to where my house was and it was on fire. Seven-foot flames came out of my bedroom side window and I realized then and there that I am irrefutably homeless.”

An emergency warning is in place for Tara and Kogan, where a ‘large, fast-moving fire’ is burning near Chinchilla Tara Road at 7.45am on Tuesday.

Residents have been told to “evacuate immediately” because their “lives may be in danger” and it “will soon become too dangerous a ride”, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement.

Properties between Bennett School Road, Mary Road, Joseph Road, Weranga North Road, Tara Kogan Road and Spinifex Road, including Chinchilla Tara Road, are affected.

The neighboring suburb of Wieambilla is currently under a Watch and Act warning as no properties are currently threatened, but residents are told conditions could ‘deteriorate rapidly’.

Large areas of bushland burned in Cypress Gardens and Millmerran Downs on Monday, with residents urged to leave if they could.

Property has been damaged as the fires swept through the area, and residents are being warned it is still not safe to return.

A fire near Primrose Drive is still burning and traveling towards Waratah Drive.
