A hospital trust has asked staff, patients and visitors to wear face masks again due to a rise in Covid and flu cases.

Local and national Covid cases had increased ‘significantly’ in recent weeks, health bosses in Sheffield said.

They also advise patients and visitors to sanitize their hands, practice social distancing and stay away if they have viral symptoms.

The measures, which applied to all hospitals and community centers under Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, were described as ‘precautionary’ and came into effect last Friday.

The trust’s website says: ‘Along with our staff, visitors, outpatients and anyone accompanying them are asked to wear masks in all clinical areas and wherever they will be in close contact with others for extended periods.

“Ask the staff if you don’t have a mask and they will get you one.”

Official data says there has been an upward trend in the numbers testing positive for Covid since July, although this has recently started to fall.
