Andy Robertson: Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool left-back likely to have surgery on shoulder injury

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is likely to undergo surgery on the shoulder injury he suffered while on international duty with Scotland.

The defender was taken off in the first half of Scotland’s European Championship qualifier against Spain after colliding with goalkeeper Unai Simon. He walked away with his arm in a makeshift sling and was replaced by Nathan Patterson.

Robertson did not feature in Scotland’s friendly against France earlier this week and is now expected to undergo surgery on his shoulder. He will probably be sidelined for a number of months.

Klopp said: “The decision will be towards surgery. There was a small chance he could try without it, but after talking to many experts it seems like surgery will be best in the long run and that means he’s out and about.” a while.

“I don’t know exactly for how long, but shoulder surgery is not easy.

“In my experience he can get back to training quite quickly, but not football specifically because he has to be careful, there are challenges and things like that. He will be out for a while.”

The injury comes ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield. Robertson has featured in every Premier League match for Liverpool so far this season, but Klopp has other options to replace the left-back.

Kostas Tsimikas will be the likely replacement for Robertson, while Joe Gomez could also feature.

“Thank God we don’t just have Kostas like this, otherwise we would be short with the number of games we have,” Klopp said.

“Joe Gomez can play in this position. Luke Chambers and other young lads who appear in training quite often.

“You need options and Kostas is the most experienced, and that’s good. But he can’t play all the games for the time being, so we need other options and we have to make sure we can use them all.”
