A former South Florida math teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local news reports.
The body of Charles Maglio, 54, was discovered by a passerby on Oct. 1 on the ground of a local forest in Coral Springs, according to a Broward County Medical Examiner and Trauma Services report obtained by WPBF 25 News.
Maglio had been a teacher at Wellington Community High School but faced two counts of sexual misconduct after his arrest last month.
Authorities began investigating the teacher in December after reports of sending flowers to a teenager at a restaurant where she worked.
When police interviewed the student, she described multiple sexual encounters with Maglio at his apartment.

Baglio was a math teacher at Wellington High School
According to the arrest affidavit, as reported by local news, the student began visiting him in class after school because she was looking for “a fatherly mentor figure, but it escalated.”
That’s when the victim reportedly said the pair then started talking on social media and had sex several times at Maglio’s apartment.
The victim said she had slept with him at his apartment several times and kept clothes and a toothbrush there.
When the student was informed of the investigation, she reportedly contacted Baglio and “gave him a warning about a possible investigation.” She said she had deleted all their text messages and was sure he had done the same.”
When questioned, she said, “I don’t want him to get into trouble. I am in love with him.’
But when police overheard a phone conversation between Maglio and the teen, he was caught confessing his love and saying he couldn’t wait for the teen to turn 18, according to The Palm Beach Post.
Under Florida law, the age of consent is 18 and 16 and 17 year olds can only consent to a partner under the age of 24.
Maglio surrendered to the sheriff’s office and self-reported the matter to the school district, Cory Strolla, his attorney, said in September.
He was arrested and charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor and assault on a student by an authority figure.
He posted the $20,000 bail and was released from jail, but was due back in court this month.
The Palm Beach County District Attorney’s Office dropped charges after his death.
After Maglio’s death was confirmed, his attorney told local news that the “family, friends and many of his former students were saddened by the tragic loss of his life.”
